Eden Hall vineyards – a wonderful discovery!
Over the past few years, the Eden Valley has certainly come to the fore as a source of the most fragrant and lifted fruit from the Barossa region.
Although named a “valley”, it enjoys a significant boost in altitude and cooler average temperatures than the “Barossa Floor”.
More often than not, this produces prettier fruit; delicacy and floral notes in Riesling; violet aromatics and spice in the reds. Henschke’s Hill of Grace encapsulates the Eden Valley….a wine more lifted and subtle than Penfolds’ Grange.
As you know, we like to uncover lesser known gems where we can. Not all producers have the volume or means to scatter their wines all over the country.
When the Eden hall wines were recently presented to us, I knew we’d hit the vinous jackpot.
Halliday rates the winery 5 stars, which is less impressive than it once was, but he does have it right when he says the vineyards is “producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity”. The longer ripening period of the Eden, teamed with David and Mardi Halls penchant for meticulous viticulture and James Irvine’s winemaking, results in a fine stable of wines that are varietal; long living and utterly delicious.

2009 Eden Hall Riesling
Quite simply, this is the best Riesling I’ve tried this year. Classic Eden floral nose, with striking fruit purity in the green apple and riper citrus spectrum. Brilliantly refreshing with crisp acidity and freshness. An amazing tipple now, but sure to blossom in the cellar. Check out the price!
$18 per bottle (mixed or straight 6 pack)

2006 Eden Hall Cabernet-Shiraz-Viognier
Not a blend I see a lot of, but tasting this makes me wonder why….certainly deliberately crafted – no suggestion of being a vinous after-thought. 75% Cabernet, the cassis and pepper of the variety is beautifully integrated with the violets and spice of Shiraz and the aromatic boost of Viognier. Juicy, fleshy and savoury all at once. A wine purpose built for casual fare. Cellaring is sure to add complexity for a decade.
$22 per bottle (mixed or straight 6 pack)

2005 Eden Hall Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet is a variety that rewards the longer ripening period of the Eden Valley and this is classic Cabernet! Tremendous fruit concentration with black fruits dominant. A wine of great balance as cassis and ripe fruit characters meld with fine grained tannins. Cellar with complete confidence or drink now with a rare lamb rack.
Would retail for twice the price if labelled “Margaret River”
$36 per bottle (mixed or straight 6 pack)

2005 Eden Hall Shiraz
If you’ve not tried “Hill of Grace” this is a good place to start. Deliciously perfumed Shiraz, bursting with a bright red and purple fruit lift the variety saves only for the Eden. You’ll waft the glass around as much as you’ll sip from it. An alluring mix of fruit weight; brightness and subtle tannins on the palate.
$42 per bottle (mixed or straight 6 pack) – by a dozen for the same price as 1 bottle of Hill of Grace!
